Causes
Hand problems and injuries can develop slowly over time, such as from repetitive motion or poor form, or suddenly, like after a fall or a hit while playing a sport. There is no known cause for some hand diseases, such ganglion cysts.
Types
There are many different types of hand conditions and injuries, including:
- Broken/fractured hand
- Broken finger
- Carpal tunnel
- Ganglion cysts
- Trigger finger/thumb
- Osteoarthritis
- Tendinitis
These conditions all vary in symptoms and cause. If you are concerned about the health of your hand, contact your Dignity Health doctor.
Risk factors
Depending on the source of the pain, different illnesses have different risk factors. Sports participation significantly increases the risk of acute injuries like broken hands or fingers. You may become susceptible to tendinitis, trigger finger, carpal tunnel, and, over time, osteoarthritis if you do repetitive motions at work or while playing sports.
Common risk factors for degenerative disorders include gender and age. You may be at risk for developing a condition of the hand like carpal tunnel syndrome if you have underlying medical disorders, particularly ones that are inflammatory or that impact the nerves.
Prevention
There aren’t many actions that you can take to avoid acute injuries. Using proper protective gear while playing sports is your greatest defense against sustaining a broken bone. Properly warming up and using appropriate form can limit your chances of tendinitis or osteoarthritis flare-ups.
Enhancing posture, taking breaks, letting your grip loosen, and stretching can all help keep your hands and wrists pain-free for disorders like carpal tunnel.
Healthy habits, such as refraining from smoking and eating a balanced diet high in Calcium and Vitamin D, support bone health and lower the risk of fractures.

FAQs
What is done in plastic surgery?
What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve appearance and self-esteem. Cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by health insurance because it is elective.
Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. In general, reconstructive surgery is performed to improve function, but may also be completed to approximate a normal appearance.
Reconstructive surgery is typically covered by most health insurance policies, although coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary greatly.
If I have Botox or Restylane, how often would I need to repeat the injections?
Botox lasts about three to four months, and the treatment can be repeated as needed. When it wears off, you will begin to notice increased muscle action and some reformation of the wrinkles. It appears that with repeated use, the effect of Botox becomes longer lasting.
Restylane injections last for about six months, and can also be repeated as needed.
How do I know what size breast implant is right for me?
The decision is based on a number of factors, including the patient’s desires, reasons for the surgery and overall health.
For example, are you doing it because you feel your breasts are too small relative to your body contour or are you unhappy with the size and firmness of your breasts following pregnancy, breastfeeding or major weight loss? Unevenness between the breasts can also be a motivating factor. Your surgeon can help you make the right decision during your pre-surgical appointment(s).
